About the ASCO
Educational Book
Educational Book
manuscripts highlight the
current standards of care, discuss existing technologies, and look
toward future therapeutic possibilities and novel treatment modalities.
Organized by track and by topic, the 2009 Educational Book
contains 118 manuscripts featuring materials from 76 sessions.
The ASCO
Educational Book
provides a
preview of the practice-changing and innovative science to be presented
at the upcoming Annual Meeting, and prospective attendees are
encouraged to use it as a resource when determining which sessions they
will attend. More importantly, the ASCO Educational Book
remains a valuable reference publication long after the conclusion of
the Meeting.
Although it has been
more than a decade since the first generation
of molecular targeted agents was introduced for the treatment of
cancer,
several challenges remain. A significant number of patients do not
derive
meaningful benefit from this revolutionary therapy. We have learned a
lot during
the past several years with regard to the mechanism of action,
molecular basis
of resistance, and patient selection for these agents, and we are
beginning to be
able to identify patients who might benefit from targeted
therapy. The pace of research in oncology has
quickened and the focus of research is becoming sharper, and the ASCO
Annual
Meeting offers an opportunity to learn, deliberate, and exchange
knowledge for
today’s practice and tomorrow’s research. In a
small — but significant and enduring
way — this edition of the ASCO Educational
Book contributes
to furthering knowledge and enhancing patient care.
For the second year,
we have asked our distinguished
contributors to include Key Points, making it easier for readers to
identify
the main takeaway concepts of each manuscript. We also have developed a
second Table
of Contents (organized by topic as opposed to track) to allow the
reader
enhanced navigation options. For the
first time in 2009, an Expert Panel
was asked to review each manuscript’s
fair/balanced nature, as well as its clinical relevance, educational
value,
accuracy, clarity, organization, and completeness.
The
2009 edition contains 118 articles, representing 76 Educational
Sessions. As
before, the ASCO Educational
Book will be
available on ASCO.org (www.asco.org/edbook) beginning in
mid-April,
with articles fully searchable by title, author name, and article
keyword. ASCO members have free access to
full-text articles
in PDF format, and the Overviews of each manuscript are available to
all users.
